Hastings is a seaside town and borough in East Sussex. Popular with visitors since 1066, the famous battle took place 8 miles to the northwest at Senlac Hill, Battle. Hastings later became one of the medieval Cinque Ports. In the 19th century, it became a popular tourist destination as the railway allowed easy access to the town.
he three-mile seafront of Hastings stretches from the fishing fleet at the eastern end through the hustle and bustle of the arcades and funfair rides, to the pier and unique double-decker promenade Bottle Alley, arriving finally at peaceful Grosvenor Gardens.
Still popular with tourists today, Hastings once boasted the largest beach-based fishing fleet in Europe. The area here is called the Stade, which is a Saxon term meaning landing place. The three-mile seafront stretches from the Old Town, with its arcades, miniature railway and crazy golf courses (the world championships are held here) to the pier and unique double-decker promenade, ending at Grosvenor Gardens.
