Future Events

MCS Survey Dungeness
31st May 3pm to 7pm

This is a challenging, but fascinating event, involving a 40-minute walk over shingle to reach our survey area, so is not suitable for young children or anyone with mobility issues. Numbers are limited here, so please register through the Marine Conservation Society website if you would like to take part. Full details will be sent out (including how to get to the meeting point) a few days before the event. Dungeness is a remote and mysterious place and we could find absolutely anything. Treasure has been found here recently!

Tidal Treasures Exhibition
Old Bank, 3-4 Grand Parade, St Leonards-on-Sea
The Tidal Treasures: Sculpting with Salvaged Plastics exhibition showcase sculptures from seven local artists. Strandliners collected, cleaned and categorised what was found during beach and riverbank events. The plastics were given to local artists to be interpreted and sculpted into something new. The exhibition will be open from 11am to 4pm from Thursday 29th May to Sunday 2nd June.

Sussex Bay Launch – June 13th
A vision for Sussex Bay: 100 miles of coastline where our seascape and rivers flourish. A healthy blue ecosystem in which nature, people and local economy can thrive. The aim is to generate a £50 million fund by 2050 to accelerate local seascape recovery along 100 miles of Sussex coastline. Sussex Bay is launching to the public on 13th June. The event in Brighton is sold out, but you can find out more about Sussex Bay here.

Brand Audit Survey, River Ouse
Sunday 14th July, 10.00 am to 12 noon
This will be a pick and survey along the banks of the Ouse in Lewes. We will be comparing the data with previous surveys and will produce a ‘Litter DNA’. Kingfishers were seen here! Please register here if you would like to take part. Full details (including meeting point) will be sent out nearer the time.

Awareness Days

World Environment Day – June 5th
World Environment Day 2024 focuses on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”  We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land. You can find out more and watch a short video here.

World Ocean Day – June 8th
The ocean sustains humanity and all life on earth. But humanity continues to make decisions that threaten the health of the ocean as well as our own future. The theme this year is Awaken New Depths. The UN is hosting a free, virtual event on Friday 7th June as we awaken new depths of understanding, compassion, collaboration and commitment for the ocean. You can find out more and get tickets here.

World Refill Day – June 16th
World Refill Day is a global campaign to prevent plastic pollution and help people live with less waste. A day of action uniting our global community every year on 16th June, the campaign is designed to create an alternative vision of the future and accelerate the transition away from single-use plastic towards refill and reuse systems. Find out more here.

What to look for in June

This month we are asking you to look out for seaweed. Could you take part in the Big Seaweed Search, a citizen science project from the Natural History Museum and the Marine Conservation Society? Taking part helps monitor the effects of environmental change on Britain’s sea life by exploring the seashore at low tide and recording the living seaweeds you find there. This is a great project for children over the half-term holiday! You can read more on our blog. Or to tie in with the launch of the Sussex Bay, you could also register for the Sussex Kelp Recording Scheme and record any kelp you find.
