Could you nominate Strandliners for an award?
An award from Movement for Good could be used towards putting on more events like Love Our Rother to help increase public awareness of plastic pollution and climate change, and what we can do to help.
Please follow this link to nominate us for the £1,000 draw under the environment and climate category, and continue through to nominate us for £5,000 if you wish. This should only take 2 minutes.
Note: when you type Strandliners CIC in the search, it will say no results found – simply tick the box that says registration exempt and complete the short form. Thank you for your support.
Future Events
The Big River Watch
Friday May 3rd to Monday May 6th
Many of our rivers are far from healthy, but if we want to restore them, The Rivers Trust needs more information. The Big River Watch is a chance to be part of that, contributing to a national data set through citizen science to help build a picture of river health. You can take part by downloading the app and taking part in a 15 minute citizen science survey of your local river stretch. Find out more here.
Eastbourne Spring Water Festival
Friday 10th to Sunday 19th May
Strandliners will have a stand at the EcoFair on Saturday 11th May from 10am to 4 pm on the Western Lawns with a display and activities. Come along and have a chat to the team. You find out more about the festival here.
Studio at the Allotments
Wednesday May 15th, 1.00 to 7.00 pm
Eastbourne is home to a thriving culture of allotments dating back to the 19th century. Allotments are becoming increasingly important, not just for local food security, but also for health and wellbeing. Studio at the Allotments offers an open afternoon at Hydneye Allotments with a range of activities. Strandliners will be there. (Image: Eastbourne ECO Action Network)
Battle’s Big Green Day
Saturday 18th May, 10.30 am to 4.00 pm, St Mary’s Church, Battle
Find out about Battle Community Eco Action. Stalls and activities, art exhibition and more. Strandliners will be there.
A Curious Town Grows
24th May to 2nd June
Strandliners volunteers have been collecting plastic rubbish for the artists, who are making sculptures for an exhibition as part of this immersive arts festival. You can find a list of events and sign up here.
MOOC Masterclass
Some of our volunteers completed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) with the UN and OU Netherlands in 2020-21. A new MOOC is currently being developed but there is a Masterclass on Unnecessary, Avoidable and Problematic Plastic Products and Polymers available now to study now at your own pace. There is no cost. This could be a taster for a future MOOC. The Strandliners team is happy to give support anyone who would like to take part.
What to look for in May
This month we are asking you to look out for stones with holes. Hagstones, as they are known, were thought to have magical properties, keeping witches away and protecting us from many ills. Find out more in our blog.
Past Events
Fairlight Berm
Our gallant team braved the elements to spend the day collecting rubbish that had collected behind the entire length of the berm. With too many items to carry out a full audit, we separated what we found into drinking containers, polystyrene and general rubbish, as we did before. We recovered over 120 kg of rubbish (including nearly 200 bottles), which will be collected by our friends from the Pett Level Independent Life Boat.
Young Strandliners
Our Young Strandliners carried out a strandline bio-blitz and recorded more than 20 different species – then finished the morning with a stone tower competition. If you know a young person aged 10 to 18 who is interested in environmental activities, please email.
Membership of Strandliners
Membership runs from 1st January to 31st December each year.
Benefits of becoming a member include a quarterly online magazine, The Fulmar, a monthly raffle to win a sea bean, and opportunities to join beach, marine & citizen science workshops.
Thank you to all our supporters who have already renewed their membership for 2024.
